The pinnacle of the visit came at the Chief Dakamela Awards, where Dawn Thandeka King was not only honoured as a distinguished guest but was also presented with a special award recognising her exceptional contribution to the African film and television industry.

Her acclaimed performances in Uzalo and Shaka iLembe have resonated deeply with audiences across Southern Africa, and the overwhelming reception she received in Bulawayo was a testament to the admiration Zimbabweans have for her work and legacy.

One of the most impactful moments of the visit was a youth empowerment workshop hosted at Amakhosi Theatre, which proudly came on board as the official venue partner. The workshop attracted close to 100 aspiring actors, filmmakers, writers and young creatives from across Bulawayo, all eager to learn from one of Africa's most celebrated actresses.

The interactive session became far more than a masterclass. Dawn shared candid insights into her journey, speaking about discipline, resilience, professionalism and remaining authentic in an ever-changing industry. Participants were encouraged to embrace their own stories, invest in continuous learning and pursue excellence with purpose.

The workshop left many attendees inspired and reaffirmed the importance of creating platforms where established industry leaders can mentor the next generation of African storytellers. Throughout her stay, Dawn embraced the warmth and rich culture of Bulawayo, describing the love she received from the local community as deeply moving and admitting that leaving was a bittersweet experience. She celebrated the visit as a meaningful connection between South Africa and Zimbabwe, immersed herself in the city's food, entertainment and everyday culture, and quickly adopted the popular local phrase, “Hantsho phela”, as one of her favourite expressions.

Beyond the Chief Dakamela Awards, she was also hosted by Highlanders FC, further reflecting the city's appreciation for her remarkable contribution to African film and television. Originally planned as a seven-day visit, the programme organically evolved into a ten-day cultural and creative exchange, allowing Dawn and the MIChiko PR delegation to experience Bulawayo and Nkayi more deeply while engaging with local communities, creatives, cultural leaders and tourism stakeholders. The extended stay reinforced the growing value of cross-border collaboration and highlighted Bulawayo as a destination rich in heritage, creativity and hospitality.
